Select Mr & Mrs Smith Hotels Bookable On IHG’s Platform Starting On October 6, 2020

IHG Hotels and Mr & Mrs Smith announced their partner back in September 2019, which was supposed to start in early 2020 but was delayed due to Covid-19.

A small number (5 to 10) of Mr & Mrs Smith hotels will start appearing on IHG rate search starting on October 6, 2020, and the plan is to roll this out to 100 hotels by the end of the month and to all 400+ properties by the end of November.

You can access IHG’s page for Mr & Mrs Smith here.

Note that all other Mr & Mrs Smith hotels will disappear from the IHG rate search than those that are bookable at present.

Few things to note:

  • Award pricing will be dynamic – not sure what points to cash value IHG will use (we should find this tomorrow)
  • Members will earn the usual number of points including the elite bonus for Mr & Mrs Smith stays
  • The Mr & Mrs Smith pricing is the same as on their website (OTA or direct hotel pricing could be different)
  • Ambassador and Kimpton Inner Circle members are eligible for a room upgrade and GoldSmith welcome gift
  • Award nights must be canceled a minimum 30 days before the intended stay
  • Credit card free night or fourth night free benefits don’t apply for Mr & Mrs Smith hotels
  • 400+ or Mr & Mrs Smith’s 1,600 or so properties will participate in this IHG initiative

Conclusion

It is good that IHG and Mr & Mrs Smith have now finalized the partnership and begin rolling out the properties on the booking platform starting with handful tomorrow.

I am eager to learn how many points these Mr & Mrs Smith hotels will require as some of them are really expensive, and if the pricing is entirely dynamic, the number of points required for free nights could be astronomical.

However, you have to be really careful if booking an award night with Mr & Mrs Smith hotel using IHG Rewards Club points because they become entirely noncancelable 30 days before your stay. Not sure if you only forfeit the points in case of no-show or if there is a potential monetary penalty involved too.

Why would anyone pay 500 euros a year for Mr & Mrs Smith’s program with a 3% payback when you can get close to the same benefits being InterContinental Ambassador at $200/year?

You will likely earn faster free nights with IHG Rewards Club than with Mr & Mrs Smith’s own program that requires you to consume 33 nights for every free one (assuming that the paid and award nights are at the same average cost)?
