My goodness, the bonuses on Marriott’s co-branded credit cards just keep getting better and better.

Amazing new Bonvoy credit card bonuses

The two co-branded Marriott Amex cards are offering phenomenal new welcome bonuses that are available through January 13, 2021. Both of these bonuses are even offering Marriott Bonvoy Platinum status.

The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card, which has a $450 annual fee :RFBonvoyBrillant:, is offering the following:

  • Receive complimentary Bonvoy Platinum status for the 2021 status year (valid through early 2022)
  • Earn 100,000 Bonvoy bonus points after spending $5,000 within the first three months
  • Earn 25,000 Bonvoy points after you first anniversary of card membership

Meanwhile, the Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card, which has a $125 annual fee (Rates & Fees), is offering the following:

  • Receive complimentary Bonvoy Platinum status for the 2021 status year (valid through early 2022)
  • Earn 100,000 Bonvoy bonus points after spending $5,000 within the first three months
  • Get up to $150 back in statement credits for eligible purchases on U.S. advertising in select media within the first six months of card membership

Marriott Amex cards are offering limited time increased bonuses

That’s right, you get Marriott Platinum status!

Both the Bonvoy Brilliant Card and Bonvoy Business Card are offering Platinum status to new members (unfortunately existing cardmembers aren’t eligible for this). During the limited-time offer period, if you’re approved for the card and meet the spend requirements, Platinum status would be valid from January 31, 2021 through February 1, 2022. This is the first time ever that Platinum status has been offered as part of the bonuses on either of these cards.

Platinum status at Marriotts is useful, as you receive:

  • Room upgrades subject to availability, all the way up to a standard suite
  • Access to executive lounges, except at Ritz-Carlton
  • A welcome gift, with complimentary breakfast as a choice at many brands
  • Guaranteed 4 PM late check-out, except at resorts, where it’s subject to availability
  • 50% bonus points on stays

Obviously, most people are traveling less now than in the past, so the timing for this isn’t ideal. I’d note a few things on that front:

  • There’s no way Marriott would be offering this promotion if it weren’t for coronavirus
  • While Marriott sometimes struggles with managing expectations, Platinum status is extremely useful overall
  • We could potentially see Marriott extend status again next year or lower elite thresholds, so it might be easier to requalify than you’d assume (only time will tell)
  • Marriott has technically suspended brand standards for the time being, meaning hotels don’t have to offer all perks, though personally, I’ve found most hotels to be pretty good about this

Marriott Platinum members may receive suite upgrades

These Marriott cards offer long-term value

Generous welcome bonuses aside, I consider both of these cards to be worth keeping long term, even if you’re not ordinarily a Marriott loyalist.

The $450 annual fee Bonvoy Brilliant Card offers the following, among other things:

  • A $300 annual Marriott statement credit, whereby $300 of charges per year at Marriotts will be reimbursed; this can apply to room rate and any other eligible charges, so if you spend at least $300 per year at Marriotts, this should more or less be worth face value, and lower the real “out of pocket” on this card to $150 per year
  • An anniversary free night award that is valid for a property costing up to 50,000 Bonvoy points; this compares favorably to other Bonvoy cards, which typically offer free night certificates valid at properties costing up to 35,000 points
  • 15 elite nights towards status annually, which will make it easier to earn Bonvoy Platinum status in the future
  • Also keep in mind that as part of this offer you get 25,000 bonus points on your first anniversary, which is an incentive to keep the card

Use your $300 credit at virtually any Marriott property

The $125 annual fee Bonvoy Business Card offers the following, among other things:

  • An anniversary free night award that is valid for a property costing up to 35,000 Bonvoy points
  • 15 elite nights towards status annually, which will make it easier to earn Bonvoy Platinum status in the future; if you have a personal and business Bonvoy card, you can earn up to 30 elite nights towards status annually

Are you eligible for these Marriott credit cards?

Due to just how many co-branded Marriott credit cards there are, it can be hard to keep track of the rules when it comes to eligibility for the bonuses.

The Bonvoy Brilliant Card welcome offer is not available to applicants who have had this product, or the Starwood Preferred Guest Luxury Card (which is briefly what this card was known as).

Furthermore, the welcome offer is not available to applicants who:

  • Have or have had The Ritz-Carlton Credit Card from JPMorgan or the J.P. Morgan Ritz-Carlton Rewards Credit Card in the last 30 days
  • Have acquired the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Rewards Premier Plus Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Bonvoy Premier Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Rewards Premier Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Bonvoy Bold Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Bonvoy Premier Plus Business Credit Card from Chase or the Marriott Rewards Premier Plus Business Credit Card from Chase in the last 90 days
  • Have received a new Card Member bonus or upgrade offer for the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card from Chase, Marriott Rewards Premier Plus Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Bonvoy Premier Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Rewards Premier Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Bonvoy Bold Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Bonvoy Premier Plus Business Credit Card from Chase or the Marriott Rewards Premier Plus Business Credit Card from Chase in the last 24 months

The Bonvoy Business Card welcome offer is not available to applicants who have had this product, or who have had the Starwood Preferred Guest Business Credit Card from American Express.

On top of that, the welcome offer is not available to applicants who:

  • have or have had the Marriott Bonvoy Premier Plus Business Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Rewards Premier Plus Business Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Bonvoy Business Credit Card from Chase, or the Marriott Rewards Business Credit Card from Chase in the last 30 days
  • have acquired the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Rewards Premier Plus Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Bonvoy Bold Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Bonvoy Premier Credit Card from Chase or the Marriott Rewards Premier Credit Card from Chase in the last 90 days
  • received a new Card Member bonus offer in the last 24 months on the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Rewards Premier Plus Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Bonvoy Bold Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Bonvoy Premier Plus Credit Card from Chase or the Marriott Rewards Premier Credit Card from Chase

Bottom line

Both the Bonvoy Brilliant Card and Bonvoy Business Card are offering incredible welcome bonuses that include Bonvoy Platinum status for the 2021 program year. These are phenomenal offers that I’d highly recommend taking advantage of, if you’re eligible.

Not only are these cards that are worth getting for the bonuses, but they’re also worth keeping long term. While there’s perhaps some sticker shock with the $450 annual fee on the Brilliant Card, the $300 annual credit and annual free night certificate should more than justify that fee alone.

Times sure have changed when Marriott Platinum status is being offered as part of a credit card welcome bonus…
